Course Content
This 8-week course is an ideal place to start your mindfulness journey. It is a highly practical course where you will learn skills that will enable you to start to weave mindfulness into daily life and support your ongoing practice. The structure is based on the Internationally recognised program: ‘Finding Peace in a Frantic World’ by Mark Williams and Danny Penman.
During the 90-minute live online sessions, you will be skillfully guided through a series of mindfulness meditation and exploratory activities which have been carefully sequenced to show you how to gradually settle your mind and enhance your natural happiness. As educators, you are faced with a multitude of challenges in school on a daily basis and building resilience is one of the threads that runs through the entire course. You will have opportunities to investigate your habitual patterns, and your reactions to situations.
A beginners mind is one of the desirable attitudes to bring to mindfulness and as such you will be exploring what it feels like to move away from living on auto-pilot, as well as different ways of responding, and the value of ‘taking a pause’ to allow thoughtful, intentional action. There will be daily exercises to do at home beginning around 15 minutes per day and building up to 30-45 minutes a day by the end of the course.
The home-practice is an essential part of the course, and really is where the learning takes place. At the start of the course, you are encouraged to consider where you can set aside time for the home-practice in an already busy schedule. You will be able to access the handouts, videos and recorded guided meditations online after each session. By the end of the course, you will most likely have established a daily routine to sustain your mindfulness practice and most people report back that they are noticing positive effects within the first few weeks.
It is important to be aware that Mindfulness is not always an appropriate intervention for all people all of the time, and you will be asked to complete a health questionnaire as well as have a one-to-one meeting with your tutor prior to Session 1.
