Course Content
This online summer program aims to equip you with a set of new skills that will nurture your own wellbeing and give you the best possible start to the academic year. Increased resilience, emotional regulation, and a sense of calm are some of the changes you may notice as you progress through the course and beyond.
During the 2-hour weekly live online sessions, you will be skillfully guided through a series of mindfulness meditations and exploratory activities which have been carefully sequenced to show you how to gradually settle your mind and enhance your natural happiness. As educators, you are faced with a multitude of challenges in school on a daily basis and building resilience is one of the threads that runs through the entire course.
You will have opportunities to investigate your habitual patterns, and your reactions to situations. A beginners mind is one of the desirable attitudes to bring to mindfulness and as such you will be exploring what it feels like to move away from living on auto-pilot, as well as different ways of responding, and the value of ‘taking a pause’ to allow thoughtful, intentional action.
The daily exercises will start at around 15 minutes per day, increasing to 30-45 minutes a day by the 4th week. The home-practice is an essential part of the course, and really is where the learning takes place. At the start of the course, you are encouraged to consider where you can set aside time for the home-practice. Access to the handouts, videos and recorded guided meditations online will be provided after each session.
It is important to be aware that Mindfulness is not always an appropriate intervention for all people all of the time, and you will be asked to complete a health questionnaire as well as have a one-to-one meeting with your tutor prior to Session 1.
